Maryland
entered Statehood 28 Apr 1788 as the 7th State

Several states seceded right after the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Maryland was one of three "slave states" that did not secede. The other two states that did not secede were Delaware & Kentucky. While Kentucky declared itself neutral in the conflict, Maryland & Delaware were garrisoned by Union forces throughout the war to prevent their secession.

NOTES:
Maryland has twenty-three counties and the city of Baltimore, which is not under county jurisdiction. At the courthouses are recorded transfers of land, estates, and other records. While some records are available in the counties, most original and/or microfilm copies of land, estate, vital, and court records have been transferred to the Maryland State Archives. As new county records are created they will continue to be filmed and sent to the state archives.
