Edward Wm POU, (cousin of James Paul Buchanan), a Representative from North Carolina; born in Tuskegee, Macon County, Ala., September 9, 1863; moved to North Carolina with his parents, who settled in Smithfield in 1867; received private instructions and attended the common schools and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1885 and practiced in Smithfield, Johnston County, N.C.; chairman of the Democratic executive committee of Johnston County in 1886; solicitor of the fourth judicial district of North Carolina 1890-1901; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1896 to the Fifty-fifth Congress; elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-seventh and to the sixteen succeeding Congresses and served from March 4, 1901, until his death; chairman, Committee on Claims (Sixty-second, Sixty-third, and Sixty-fourth Congresses), Committee on Rules (Sixty-fifth, Seventy-second, and Seventy-third Congresses); delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1916; died in Washington, D.C., April 1, 1934; funeral services were held in the Chamber of the United States House of Representatives; interment in Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield, N.C.
