HUGG (not Hurger or Hugin).
The translation by SALLEY
was incorrect as several other
mis-translations. Also incorrect in this
record is the Church Bottes
was "Gemeine Gottes"
which translated means "congregation
of God", (there is
nothing known in German as the Church of
Bottes). Of course I am sure you know
that Hans translates in English to John,
as does Johann, Johannes, etc.

Rev. John Ulrick
GIESSENDANNER I, a native of Switzerland
and a Lutheran minister, came to this country
with the third transportation of German and Swiss
settlers, arriving in 1737, to Charleston SC
headed for Swiss colonies in S.C., Orangeburg

future partner in life, who had resided at his

Rev. John Ulrick
GIESSENDANNER I was "quietly"
married on 15 Nov 1737, by Major
Christian MOTTE, doubtless by him, as no
minister of the Gospel was within their reach, to
which Record he piously adds: 'May Jesus
unite us closely in love, as well as all faithful
married people, and cleanse and unite us with
himself, Amen.' By this union he had no
children, since both himself and his partner were
'well stricken in years'.

This was the
3rd of 9 entries made in the Church Record Book

housekeeper (name not given) who for 26 years
served in our house & who from affection and
to escape family troubles followed me over the
ocean - & to prevent & obviate any cause
offense or scandal I married her privately. Major
MOTTE read the marriage service. May Jesus unite
us closely in love, as well as faithful married
people, and cleanse and unite us with himself.
Amen".
