My POU family began it's American Roots with the arrival of Gavin POU (1716-aft 1775) when he arrived from Scotland in 1840. He arrived in Orangeburgh Township, SC, which was predominately a Swiss/German Community. The GIESSENDANNERs, Rev John Urlick, I & his nephew Rev. John U, II had arrived in Orangeburgh a few years earlier. The elder Rev. GIESSENDANNER died abt two years prior to Gavin's arrival to SC. The younger Rev. John U, II was a Lutheran minister. He kept church records on marriages, baptisms, deaths, etc. on his parishioners, including the POU family. Some of his records are included.

NOTES
James POU (1793), son of John POU, II & Margaret WOLFE, married 1816 to Ann KAIGLER (1794-1832). Ann was 1 of 9 children born to Michael KAIGLER (1758-1814) & Elizabeth SAYLOR (1769-1844). Michael who was the youngest of 9 children born to Andrew KAIGLER and Katherine COPPLEPOWER & Elizabeth was the daughter of Issias SAYLOR & Elizabeth Unknown.

Ann's younger brother, Henry KAIGLER (1804-1884) married Lucinda WOLFE (1806-bet 1837-1840). Lucinda is probably a niece of Margaret's.

Ann & Henry were minors at the time of their father's (Michael) death in 1815. A guardian was appointed in 1815, Lexington Co, SC for Michael's (five) minor children. Ann, Harriet, Lavinia, Drusilla & Henry.

Michael's minor children asked for a right division of the property. A suit was filed against their older brother, David KAIGLER, et al 26 Jan 1815, who administered Michael's estate - - signing the suit were John CRAPPS, David KAIGLER, & Elizabeth, Michael's mother (who made her mark).

1788 - Michael was included in the list of members of the German Lutheran Church of Salem, on Sandy Run.  The list also shows Mikel KEGLER with what appears to be his father and brother (both listed as Andreas KOGLER), Jacob SAYLOR, apparently his father-in-law, and John LOWERMAN

1790 - North part of Orangeburgh District, SC, census (p. 95), includes the Michael KAIGLER household with one male under 16, two females, seven slaves and one other free person

Henry KAIGLER (1804-1884) married Lucinda WOLFE (1806-bet 1837-1840) on 2/27/182?. Together they had five children. After Lucinda's death, Henry married Sarah GREENE & had 4 children.

Children of Henry KAIGLER & Lucinda WOLFE

  1. Henry KAIGLER, Jr. 1829-1907
  2. James Russell KAIGLER 1831-1891
  3. John Wolfe KAIGLER 1834
  4. Elizabeth KAIGLER 1836

The following is the imperfect translation of the incomplete record kept in German, by Rev. John U GIESSENDANNER, I and by his nephew, Rev John GIESSENDANNER, II before his departure for England:
