Notes

Dr. James Stanhope KYLE was an older brother to my Robert E KYLE who settled in the Old Center area in 1839. When Robert's family came to Texas, James was attempting to establish a medical practice in Tippah County, MS. He graduated from Ohio College of Medicine in 08 Mar 1837 (his diploma was written on sheepskin in latin .. in 1950, Wm P KYLE (1884-1969), of Teneha, had the original) and returned to Mississippi. He married Amanda Malvira JOHNSON of Salem, MS on May 4, 1841. Dr. KYLE's diploma was written, in Latin, on sheepskin. In 1950, It was in the possession of Wm Penn KYLE (1884-1969), of Teneha, Shelby Co, TX, son of Robert E KYLE, Jr. had possession of the original. Wm Penn KYLE was the grandson of Robert E KYLE, Sr and grand-nephew to Dr. James S. KYLE.

Leaving immediately for East Texas to be near his brother Robert, they traveled by two-horse wagon. One horse died on the way. They finally landed at the McFadden Creek home of his brother with one horse and $500.

Dr. KYLE began his medical practice at once, traveling by horseback, from Old Center to Western Louisiana and much of East Texas. He built a large house of hewn pine logs, held together with wooden pegs, located on a hill side bank of McFadden Creek. It was still standing in the 1980's and may still be.

That log house, thought to be the oldest one left in this county, was sold to Mr & Mrs Travis WILLIAMSON who planned to restore it to its original condition as a "heritage house".

Dr. KYLE and Amanda did not have any children; but his nephew Paris PACE, lived in his home. Paris was born with a cleft pallet & had a speech impediment. Paris was the son of Dr. KYLE's sister Susan KYLE PACE. He inherited part of Dr. KYLE's' land and sold 720 acres to James Russell GRACE. Paris died 6 years after his uncle and was buried near Dr. KYLE on the bank of McFadden Creek near his home. Paris 1st married 1858 to Mary Eliza UPTON 1842 NC, dau of Thomas E UPTON & Nancy A Unknown. He 2nd married Eliza Unknown (widowed) who married 1889 Mr MOORE.

Dr. KYLE had planned to make a doctor of the oldest son of Robert's, James Stanhope KYLE (his namesake and whom my grandfather James Stanhope Bryan was named after), but Dr. KYLE died August 22, 1857, while James was too young to go away to school.

It is said that Robert E KYLE & his brother, Dr. James S KYLE, had an agreement that the one who died first was to manifest his spirit to the other if there was such thing as "spirit life". One night Robert E was riding by Dr KYLE's cemetery (which was on the banks of McFadden Creek & the homeplace of his still living sister-in-law, Amanda KYLE. He saw a strange light in the cemetery and it looked like the image of his brother, Dr. KYLE. Robert's horse shyed away from the apparition. Robert called out to the ghost "Jim, is that you?". The ghost made no reply, just vanished.

Dr. KYLE's widow, Amanda, died in 1890 and was buried beside her husband Dr. KYLE. She was crippled from rheumatism and had to be buried in a sitting position.

Robert E KYLE was appointed administrator of his brother's estate which consisted of some $50,000. The widow Amanda M JOHNSON KYLE made application to be appointed administratrix of her husband's estate but her application was ignored by the Court and Robert was appointed.

After several years of court proceedings, the Estate was finally settled, peacefully. A public sale was held and Amanda bought 2 old Negro slaves (Jim & Milly), paying $150. each. The 2 slaves were later buried at the old Dr. KYLE Cemetery.

Afer the death of Dr KYLE, Amanda KYLE remarried in 1868, to James MORRIS and lived for years at the old home. Then reportedly through the interferrance of others - she divorced and deeded the home to her niece, Mrs. Mary E MIMS, with the consideration that she would care for, and supply, all necessities of life, food, medicine, etc.

NOTE: James MORRIS was 1st married to Minerva McGEE & they had daughter Sarah who was about 8 at the time her father married Amanda. Sarah married in 1879 to Robert E KYLE (1858-1929) who was a nephew to Dr KYLE.

Julia Bryan DeSteigur, sister-in-law to my great-grandmother, Nancy E Kyle, dau of Robert Edmunson & wife of John Henry BRYAN, recounted her families move from Alabama to Texas and some of what life was like for the early settlers of Panola County. In that she stated "[The] War between the States had deprived the neighborhood of doctors. There was one woman, a doctor's widow, who had nursed and studied medicine. She was always called in to attend the sick. People for miles around would summon this good woman to come to their aid when illness struck down someone in the family." Amanda ("Aunt Mandy") was the woman she referred to.

Amanda died in 1890 and was buried beside her husband Dr. KYLE. She was crippled from rheumatism and had to be buried in a sitting position.

My grandfather, James Stanhope BRYAN was named after his great-uncle.

Notes on James KYLE & Alley McNEIL

I have found very little actual documentation on James or Alley KYLE. Most of my documentation on the two of them has been handed down from other KYLE researchers that have also "acquired" their information as "handed down". This leads way for mistakes, however, the documentation on James & Alley's children is research that I have done.

According to what I have found and been supplied by other KYLE researchers, there are contradictory reports. I show James born in both Scotland & North Carolina with years ranging from 1753 to 1780. Since his eldest child was born 1802, I am leaning (for now) to 1780.

Alley's maiden name is reportedly "McNEIL". Some reports have her born in Ireland and the dau of Lord James Stanhope, of Armagh Manor, of Ireland, who, as one story goes, disinherited Alley for marrying James. It was after their marriage that James & Alley came to America. However, some reports have them both born in North Carolina, while others have them born in Virginia.

The KYLE's came from Scotland .. Some say seven KYLE brothers married seven EDMUNSON sisters somewhere down the line, thus the name Robert Edmunson KYLE.

Recorded in an application for membership, filed with the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, a descendant of Robert KYLE's stated, "My Great-Great Grandfather, Lord Stanhope, disinherited my Grandmother's Mother (Alley S McNEAL) for marrying Dr. KYLE. They came to America - first to VA .. Dr KYLE was killed by lightning. For several generations, the sons have been named James Stanhope KYLE for this ancestor in Ireland."

According to family history passed down from my ancestor, Robert E KYLE, James (his father) was killed by lightning in Tennessee (McNairy Co?). He had taken shelter under some trees during a thunderstorm - lightning struck the trees - killing him.

At least three of James & Alley's children moved to East Texas. Sarah Kyle, her husband, Dr. John Leonard Randal, and children left McNairy Co, TN in 1838. They arrived to Texas and settled in the San Augustine area in 1838. Robert E Kyle and James S Kyle moved from Tippah Co, MS and settled in the "Old Center" area of Panola Co, Texas, with Robert arriving in 1839 and James in 1841.

Any help on James & Alley would be appreciated. I do show Alley being in McNairy Co, TN 1830. This supports that James died before 1830.

1830 McNairy Co, TN Census
