| Robert
E KYLE was born in N.C. and migrated to
McNairy County, Tennessee then to Tippah County,
Mississippi. He came to Texas in 1839 from Tippah
County, MS and settled in the Old Center area. He
purchased land in Nacogdoches County upon first
arriving (later became Panola County in 1846). He
is listed in the census in Panola County and
lived on McFadden Creek property. Robert's
sister, Sarah "Sallie"
Kyle Randal, her husband, Dr. John
Leonard Randal and their children had
moved to San Augustine area in 1838, having moved
from McNairy Co, TN. Later, their brother, James
Stanhope Kyle would follow them to Texas
in 1841. ~ ~ ~ ~
Dr. James Stanhope KYLE was an older brother to Robert
E KYLE who settled in the Old Center
area in 1839. When Robert's family came to Texas,
James was attempting to
establish a medical practice in Tippah County,
MS. He graduated from Ohio College of Medicine in
08 Mar 1837 and returned to Mississippi. He
married Amanda Malvira JOHNSON
of Salem, MS on May 4, 1841. Dr. KYLE's
diploma was written, in Latin, on sheepskin. In
1950, It was in the possession of Wm Penn KYLE (1884-1969), of Teneha, Shelby Co,
TX, son of Robert E KYLE, Jr.
had possession of the original. Wm Penn KYLE was
the grandson of Robert E KYLE, Sr
and grand-nephew to Dr. James S. KYLE.
Leaving
immediately for East Texas to be near his brother
Robert, they traveled by
two-horse wagon. One horse died on the way. They
finally landed at the McFadden Creek home of his
brother with one horse and $500.
Dr.
KYLE began his medical practice at once,
traveling by horseback, from Old Center to
Western Louisiana and much of East Texas. He
built a large house of hewn pine logs, held
together with wooden pegs, located on a hill side
bank of McFadden Creek. It was still standing in
the 1980's and may still be.
That
log house, thought to be the oldest one left in
this county, was sold to Mr & Mrs Travis
WILLIAMSON who planned to restore it to its
original condition as a "heritage
house".
Dr.
KYLE and Amanda did not
have any children; but his nephew Paris
PACE, lived in his home. Paris
was born with a cleft pallet & had a speech
impediment. He married Mary E UPTON.
Paris was the son of Dr.
KYLE's sister Susan KYLE PACE.
He inherited part of Dr. KYLE's'
land and sold 720 acres to James Russell GRACE. Paris
died 6 years after his uncle and was buried near Dr.
KYLE on the bank of McFadden Creek near
his home.
Dr.
KYLE had planned to make a doctor of the
oldest son of Robert's, James
Stanhope KYLE (his namesake and whom my
grandfather James Stanhope Bryan
was named after), but Dr. KYLE
died August 22, 1857, while James
was too young to go away to school.
It is said that Robert E KYLE
& his brother, Dr. James S KYLE,
had an agreement that the one who died first was
to manifest his spirit to the other if there was
such thing as "spirit life". One night Robert
E was riding by Dr KYLE's
cemetery (which was on the banks of McFadden
Creek & the homeplace of his still living
sister-in-law, Amanda KYLE. He
saw a strange light in the cemetery and it looked
like the image of his brother, Dr. KYLE.
Robert's horse shyed away from
the apparition. Robert called
out to the ghost "Jim,
is that you?". The ghost made no reply,
just vanished.
Dr.
KYLE's widow, Amanda,
died in 1890 and was buried beside her husband Dr.
KYLE. She was crippled from rheumatism
and had to be buried in a sitting position.
~
~ ~ ~
Robert
E KYLE was appointed administrator
of his brother's estate which consisted of some
$50,000. The widow Amanda M JOHNSON KYLE
made application to be appointed administratrix
of her husband's estate but her application was
ignored by the Court and Robert was appointed.
After
several years of court proceedings, the Estate
was finally settled, peacefully. A public sale
was held and Amanda bought 2 old Negro slaves
(Jim & Milly), paying $150. each. The 2
slaves were later buried at the old Dr.
KYLE Cemetery.

Afer
the death of Dr KYLE, Amanda KYLE
remarried in 1868, to James MORRIS and lived for years at
the old home. Then reportedly through the
interference of others - she divorced and deeded
the home to her niece, Mrs. Mary E MIMS,
with the consideration that she would care for,
and supply, all necessities of life, food,
medicine, etc.
NOTE:
James MORRIS was 1st married to Minerva
McGEE & they had daughter Sarah
who was about 8 at the time her father married Amanda.
Sarah married in 1879 to Robert
E KYLE (1858-1929) who was a nephew to Dr
KYLE.
Julia
Bryan DeSteigur, sister-in-law to my
great-grandmother, Nancy E Kyle,
dau of Robert Edmunson &
wife of John Henry BRYAN,
recounted her families move from Alabama to Texas
and some of what life was like for the early settlers of Panola
County.
In that she stated "[The] War between
the States had deprived the neighborhood of
doctors. There was one woman, a
doctor's widow, who had nursed
and studied medicine. She was always called in to
attend the sick. People for miles around would
summon this good woman to come to their aid when
illness struck down someone in the family." Amanda
("Aunt Mandy")
was the woman she referred to.
Amanda
died in 1890 and was buried beside her husband Dr.
KYLE. She was crippled from rheumatism
and had to be buried in a sitting position.
It
is said that Robert E KYLE &
his brother, Dr. James S KYLE,
had an agreement that the one who died first was
to manifest his spirit to the other if there was
such thing as "spirit life". One night Robert
E was riding by Dr KYLE's
cemetery (which was on the banks of McFadden
Creek & the homeplace of his still living
sister-in-law, Amanda KYLE. He
saw a strange light in the cemetery and it looked
like the image of his brother, Dr. KYLE.
Robert's horse shyed away from

Census records
show Elizabeth's birthplace as three
different states, PA, IN & TN.
On the 1880
Panola Co, TX census Elizabeth,
age 62, stated she & her father were
born in Indiana & her mother was born
in Kentucky. Not only did her place of
birth differ from census to census, but
her age did as well, while Robert
KYLE's stayed consistent.

Her
family had migrated from PA to SC then to
TN, however, some of the Martindale Clan
shifted back from SC to Indiana &
Ohio. Her parents were married in Union
Co, TN & that is where most of their
children were born. They later migrated
to McNairy Co, TN where, Alley
KYLE, mother of Robert E
KYLE, was listed on the 1830 census.
Five years later Elizabeth
& Robert marry in
Tippah Co, MS. Elizabeth's
parents stayed in TN so it is unclear how
she came to end up where Robert
was in MS.
Elizabeth's
younger brother Solon
born in 1821 stated he was born in
Indiana & her brother Wm born in 1824
stated he was born in Ohio. It is
possible that the family was traveling to
relatives during the births of Elizabeth,
Solon & Wm.
