Stephen Allen KING
(1800 NC-1877 TX), son of Charles KING,
married in 1824, Madison Co, AL to Sarah
Ellington DUPREE (1797 AL-1871 TX). They had
nine children, all of which were, born in Hazel Green,
Madison County, AL. Stephen moved his
family from Madison Co, AL to Shelby Co, TX about 1852
where he had purchased 315 acres of land from his uncle W.
H. KING (Wm Henry?). His homestead was about 2
miles north of the former town of Buena Vista, Shelby Co,
TX. Stephen & Sarah are
buried in Woods Cem, Panola Co, TX.
Stephen
kept a "slave book" with his entries regarding
55 slaves. This book was at one time in possession of Dr
Hardy Bryan McNEILL, a dentist, in Tyler, Smith
Co, TX and a direct descendant.
Stephen
KING's father, Charles KING,
had a mule-powered cotton gin capable of ginning about
two bales a day.
Stephen
& Sarah lived with their
son Henry P in their later years. After Stephen
became a widower, his son, Henry P lived
on the homestead and took care of him. He purchased one
boiler and engine that had been left behind on his farm
and the homestead. Evidently the gin had been converted
to steam power. (Lucius Samuel LIGHTFOOT, son-in-law Tabitha Elizabeth
KING SOLOMON, later lived on the property. source: Ginger
Compton)
Henry
P KING, christened Henry Preston Van
Buren KING, later dropped the "Van
Buren" from his name. He married Emma C
BRYAN and the family lived on a farm located
between Timpson and Teneha, Texas. Around 1891 the family
moved to San Marcos, Hays Co, TX. Deed records show Henry
there on 20 Nov 1891. They settled along the San Marcos
River at what in 1996, was known as Pecan Park off Hwy
80.

Pea Ridge, Arkansas
Elkhorn Tavern at Pea Ridge National Military Park. The
cannons mark the location of Guibor's (Confederate)
Missouri Battery during the fighting. Description: The
battle fought here on March 7-8, 1862 between Confederate
General Earl Van Dorn's Army of the West and Union
General Samuel Curtis' Army of the Southwest was the
largest fought west of the Mississippi, and with the
losses of Forts Henry and Donelson the previous month,
spelled doom for Confederate efforts in the
Trans-Mississippi region. Pea Ridge may well be the
best-preserved Civil War battlefield in the nation; the
park area appears nearly exactly as it did in 1862. The
4,300-acre park is interpreted at the park visitor center
and museum and through a driving tour that encompasses
the majority of the battlefield.
