Notes

My grandfather, James "Jimmy" S. Bryan, had 2 sons when he married my grandmother, Lula Bivens Swift. Lula had 2 daughters by a previous marriage that ended in divorce. After their marriage they had 8 children together.

Jimmy became quite ill not long after their youngest child was born. This became a real hardship for him because he was not able to provide for his family. After the family was unable to financially supply him with the care he needed, not to mention the fresh milk that he had to drink, he reluctantly went to live with his sister, Bettie Bryan Dailey. He lived with her and her family until his death.

It may seem strange in these days and times that milk was such a luxury, however, times were very hard for my grandfather back then and many things we take for granted nowadays were indeed luxuries for many, even milk.

My father spoke with fondness of my grandfather, and always regretted being too young to help take care of his father. There was always a sadness about him whenever he would speak of his father having to go live with his aunt because they family couldn't take care of him. And that he never saw his father again once he left the home.

The photo of Jimmy is the only one that I know of, however, his brother-in-law, Jess Bivens was a photographer so I know there are probably photos out there somewhere. I would love to find them.
