D.C.
BRYAN was the son of Henry BRYAN
and is my great, great, great uncle. He moved to
Texas shortly after my great, great grandfather, Allen
BRYAN. D.C. settled in
Shelby County, Texas. He owned a large amount of
land & was a large slave owner. After the
Civil War his wealth had a dramatic drop as did
so many Southerners.
His
land was in what is now known as the town of
Timpson, Shelby Co, Texas. His home still stood
as late as the 1940's & possibly the 1950's.
This would have made it near 100 years old.
He
was living in Lowndes Co, AL in 1830 & in
Russell Co, AL 1840-1850. He moved to Texas after
1854 & is found 1860-1880 in Shelby Co, TX census.
D.C. was last listed on the 1880
Shelby Co, TX census where he listed he was born
in GA & that his parents were both born in
NC. He was listed as "father-in-law"
& living with J.M. (Joel) Hargrove,
County Treasurer.
1835 - In his brother, Wm's
Last Will & Testament, recorded 13
Nov 1835 in Russell Co, AL, D.C.
inherited land and two slaves. He is
listed as living in Lowndes Co, AL. The
land was described as "520 acres
being Section 13 Township - and Range 11
lying on the southwest side of Ucher
Creek my will and desire is that said
tract be divided into 2 unequal parts 320
acres and 200 acres to be given to my
father (Henry) and my brother DeKalb
that is to say I give my father 320 acres
lying and next to Ucher Creek and the
remaining 200 acres I give unto my
brother DeKalb."
Also in his will, Wm states ...
"give (slaves) Starling and a young
woman, Billa, to my brother
DeKalb Bryan residing in Lowndes
Co, AL" - See Excerpt from
Wm Bryan's Will
1838 - D.C.
signed the "Marriage Bond" of M.A. (Mary) BRYAN
& James SCARBOUGH on 22 Jun 1838
filed in Russell Co, AL
1839 - D.C.
is a witness on "Bond" for his
brother, Allen, in the
estate of their brother, Thomas dec'd
"Allen Bryan
Bond as Guardian The state of Alabama
Russell County. Know
all men by these presents, that we Allen
Bryan, John Sims
& Decalb Bryan are
held & firmly bound unto --- Lewis,
Judge of the --- Court of said county
& his successors in office in the ---
sum of ten thousand dollars for the true
payment of which we bind ourselves our
heirs, executors & administratory
jointly & severally firmly by these
presents sealed with seals this the 5th
day of August 1839. The
condition of the above bound is such that
whereas the above Allen Bryan
has this day been appointed administrator
on the estate of Thomas Bryan
deceased. Now if the said Allen
Bryan shall well and truly
perform all the duties which and or
may be by law required of him as such
administrator then the above bond to be
null & void or else to remain in full
force. Approved this the 6th of August
1839. --- Lewis T. C. C. R. C. Allen
Bryan (seal) John Sims
(seal) Dekalb Bryan
(seal) recorded June 10th
1840."
1842 (after) D.C.
is listed as an heir in his father, Henry Bryan's,
"Will" (after 1842)
1844 - Census indicates D.C.
was married at least twice, and had at
least one daughter by his first marriage,
wife's name unknown. He married again in
1844 to Mary E Jarrall. John
W Bryan signed as a witness.
Their marriage license
is recorded in Russell Co, AL
1846-1851 Alabama
Russell County Minutes Probate Court

Ex Parte Decalb C.
Bryan Came this day Decalb
C. Bryan and makes application
to be appointed guardian of the estate
and person of Cymantha
(Samantha) E. Bryan, Minor heir of
the said D. C. Bryan.
It is therefore ordered by the court that
Decalb C. Bryan be and
he is hereby appointed Guardian of Cymantha
E. Bryan upon his entering into
bond in the sum of two hundred
dollars: And therefore came the
said Decalb C. Bryan and
tendered his bond in the sum of two
hundred dollars with James W.
Howards and Enoch Johnson as his
securities, which said bond is examined
approved and ordered to be recorded and
letters of Guardianship are ordered to
issue. [furnished by Dianna Rogers]
- NOTE: Samantha
E BRYAN (abt 1833-aft
1880) married 1850 Russell Co, AL to Joseph
B JOHNSON, son of David
JOHNSON & Catha
Ann SANDERS - Samantha
& Joseph moved to Mansfield, DeSoto
Parish, LA abt 1858.
It is
also worth noting the following
NOTE: Decalb
obviously had to be appointed guardian of
Samantha so she could
marry since she was a minor at the time.
However, I do not know who Samantha's
parents were & she was more than
likely orphaned. Also, Enoch
Johnson was the uncle of Joseph
B Johnson, husband of Samantha.
So would Decalb have
been Samantha's uncle? I
do not show any nieces by that name for
heirs of Decalb's
siblings. Also worth noting is Sophronia
Bryan who married 1846 Russell
Co, AL to Allen W BRYAN, nephew of Decalb's
was also a minor when she married. Bond
was by Alfred A Bryan, cousin of Allen
W's. Allen had
to go on a bond because Saphronia
was underage. He first had
to apply to the "Registrar of the
Orphans Court" (unknown county),
then go on a bond in order to obtain the
marriage license. Is it possible that Samantha
& Sophronia
were sisters? They obviously had a
relation to my Henry BRYAN.
1854 - Russell Co, AL
records show that on 18 Oct 1854, DeCalb
"D.C." BRYAN purchased
S.E. qt Section 24 T15 R30 for $1200 from
his brother, Allen (my
great, great grandfather). This was
shortly before Allen
left for Texas and "D.C."
followed soon after (as did their nephew,
Lucius BRYAN, son of Needham).
Allen had previously
purchased 4,444 acres in Panola County,
Texas on 25th Feb 1853.
