I, A.B. BRYAN (Allen B) do hereby make application to the Commissioner of Pensions for a pension to be granted me under the Act passed by the Thirty-third Legislature of the State of Texas and approved, April 7, A.D. 1913 on the grounds:

I enlisted and served in the military service of the Confederate States during the war between the States of the United States, and that I did not desert the Confederate service, but during said war I was loyal and true to my duty, and never at any time voluntarily abandoned my post of duty in the said service; or (that I was in the service of the State of Texas during the war, to protect said State against the Indians and Mexicans for more than 6 months). That I was honorably discharged of surrendered .. I was discharged in May 1865 and was at the time in the Arsenal at San Antonio on detail service where I had been for about two months. My command was discharged in South Texas. that I have been a bona fide citizen of the State since prior to Jan 1, A.D. 1900, and have been continuously since a citizen of the State of Texas. I do further state that I do not hold any National, State, city or county office which pays me a salary of fees of $300.00 per annum, not have I an income from any other employment of other source whatever which amounts to $300.00 per annum, not do I receive from any source whatever money or other means of support amounting in value to the sum of $300.00 per annum, nor do I own in my right, nor does any one hold in trust for my benefit or use, nor does my wife own, nor does any one hold in trust for my wife, estate or property, either real, personal or mixed either in fee of for life, of the assessed value of over one thousand dollars, exclusive of a home of the value of not more than $1,000.00; nor do I receive an aid or pension from any other State, or from the United States, or from any other source, and that I am not an inmate of the Confederate Home, and I do further state that the answers given to the following questions are true:

  3. How long have you resided in Texas?
        Since April 60 years ago
  4. In what county do you reside?
        Wood County
  5. How long have you resided in said county, and what is your postoffice address?
        19 years, My postoffice address is Hawkins, Texas, Rt F.D. Number 1
  6. Have you applied for a pension under the Confederate pension law and been rejected? If rejected, state when and where ..
        No
  7. What is your occupation, if able to engage in one?
        Milling.

    What is your physical condition?
        Good, but from age and a cripple hand can not do any work at all
  8. In what State was the command in which you served organized?
        Texas
  9. How long did you serve? Give, if possible, the date of enlistment and discharge ..
        In the Spring of 1862 and served until close of war.
  10. What was the letter of your company, number of battalion, regiment or battery?
        I enlisted in Company K, 28 Dismounted Cavalry

        My occupation was listed as a mechanic and while I was at home on furlough, I was ordered to San Antonio to make cartridge boxes and was there about six or eight weeks before the surrender.
  15. What is the assessed value of your home, if you own a home?
        None
  16. What is the assessed value of your other property?
        None
  17. Have you transferred to others any property of any kind for the purpose of becoming a beneficiary under this law?
        No

The Honorable County Judge of Wood County, Texas will please take notice that, five days after service hereof, applicant herein will apply to the Clerk of the County Court of said County and State for a commission to take the depositions of O.P. MARTINDALE and W.T. POU and who reside in the County of Shelby in the State of Texas in answer to the following interrogatories and upon the hearing of the applicant's claim for pension in behalf of applicant; said testimony is material and indispensable to applicant in furnishing the required proof of claim for a pension under the Act of April 7, 1913, the application for which is now pending before the Honorable County Judge, and the facts necessary and required to be proven under the provisions of said act, applicant believes cannot be proven by any witness residing in the County of Wood and State of Texas, which he is a bona fide resident

NOTE: Wm T Pou the uncle of Allen B & the half-brother to Sarah Pou Bryan (my great, great grandmother) ---- Oliver P. Martindale was the 1st cousin of Allen B's sister-in-law, Nancy Kyle Bryan, wife of John Henry Bryan (my great grandfather & son of Sarah Pou Bryan).

The records show that A.B. BRYAN, private, Co K, 28th Texas (Dismounted) Cavalry, C.S.A, enlisted Apr 20, 1862. On the company roll for Jan & Feb 1864, the last on file, he was reported absent, on furlough for 42 days by order of Gen TAYLOR. On a regimental return for Apr 1865, he was reported as "Absent on D.S. Ord. Dept. Order No. 57, March 7, 1865, Dept Hdqrs". No later record of him has been found.

Allen B Bryan & his uncle Wm T. Pou served in the same Company. Wm Pou's brother. Decalb Pou, (and uncle to Allen B) was "killed in action" Civil War - Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi. I am not sure what Company he served in. Wm T and Decalb were the sons of my John POU, III. Wm T was a witness for Allen B on his application. Stephen T (Thomas) & Daniel E KING also served in this Company. They were the brother-in-laws of Allen B Bryan. Daniel KING & Decalb POU were both killed at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas.
