03 Jun 1861. He served until the end of the war.
He was home on furlough when news reached him

He filed for his Civil War Soldier's pension 30
Aug 1913.
WITNESS:
I knew A.B. BRYAN in PANOLA
County, Texas before the Civil War. I know that A.B.
BRYAN enlisted and served in Co E, 3rd
Texas Regiment of the Cavalry and served from
1861 until the close of the war. He served about
four years. My reason for knowing this is that I
was with said A.B. BRYAN during
the entire time of the war. I was in the same
Regiment & Co and I know that said BRYAN
served honorably until close of war and never
deserted his post of duty at any time. I have
known said BRYAN personally
since the close of the war.

Andrew
Bacon BRYAN married Nancy McCLELLAN 4
years after his sister, Ann BRYAN
JENNINGS (widow) had married Nancy's
father, Samuel McCLELLAN (widower). This made the
Andrew and Samuel, who was Andrew's
brother-in-law, also his father-in-law. It also
made his sister, Ann, his
mother-in-law, This union also made Ann,
sister-in-law to Nancy, her stepmother. Confused?

Obituary of Andrew J.
CLAYTON
A.J.
CLAYTON died at the home of his
daughter, Mrs C.O. BRYAN
(Maude), Saturday night following several weeks
of illness beginning with pneumonia.
The
remains were carried to Tenaha Monday morning for
burial, the funeral services being held at the BRYAN
home her at 9 o'clock of that morning. A large
number of people went from here to attend the
funeral at Tenaha, the old home of deceased. A
large number of friends there were present to pay
the last tribute of respect.
Mr
CLAYTON came to the county (Panola) in
February 1886. He was the first agent at Tenaha
for the Houston East & West Texas railway
company, he opening the office there and went to
Houston. He came to Texas from Indiana only a few
years prior to that time. He served as station
agent for something like 20 years and was after
that postmaster for several years.
Following
the death of his wife six of eight years ago, he
came here to make his home with his daughter, Mrs.
BRYAN. He was just past his 74th year
and was well known by a large number of the
citizens of the county..
His
niece, Mrs MANEY, and grandson Claude
BRYAN, were here to attend the funeral,
and many messages of sorrow were received by the
family from over the county. He is survived by
two children, Mrs C.O. (Maude) BRYAN
and Claude CLAYTON. Reprinted from The Champion
Feb 27, 1918.
"On
a grassy knoll in the middle of the virgin pine
forest the Hicks Bros., pioneer lumbermen,
donated property to HE&WT Railroad so they
would build a depot, thus the beginning of TENAHA
on a 640-ac. donated tract of land. When the
first train came thru in 1886, a Union soldier, Capt.
Andrew J. CLAYTON, placed a train
caboose on the siding and erected a sign. Many
years later, Capt. CLAYTON
was asked what he thought of the raw, virgin
country he came to in 1886, he replied, "My
first impression was to catch the next train back
to civilization!" Of course he didn't
and he became one of the leaders in the
development of our town."
